Colorimetry

Do your children avoid reading?

Do you or your child avoid reading or find it difficult to follow text along a line? Do words look blurred or does text jump around on the page?

If your answer is yes to any of these, it might be that you are suffering with visual stress. The discomfort of Visual Stress is due to a disturbance in the link between the back of the eye and the brain. Visual stress is more common after reading for long periods of time and you may suffer with other symptoms such as reduced concentration, glare from troublesome light reflected from a white page or computer screen, double vision, sore or strained eyes or headaches.

Visual stress is often more common in children with specific learning difficulties. It is important to remember that dyslexia is a separate condition.

Can Coloured Overlays and spectacle lenses help?

Specifically coloured overlays or tinted lenses can help some children with their symptoms of visual stress and improve their attention span when reading. However, it is vital to have a full eye examination before trying coloured overlays or lenses. First of all we need to find out if you need a spectacle prescription or that we need to do some simple eye exercises to help your eyes work better together.

After your eye examination the next step is to assess the benefit of different coloured overlays on the fluency of reading and the symptoms such as headaches blurred or double vision. If the specific coloured overlay helps your child we usually advise that it is used for all reading for more than a school half term before considering tinted spectacle lenses.

If the coloured overlay helps your child and improves their attention span, reading speed and fluency and their comprehension, the next step will be to have a Colorimetry assessment. The Colorimeter is used to determine the unique coloured tint for your child's spectacle lens. Whilst an overlay will help when reading, a spectacle lens will help your child for writing and using a computer as well. The specific colour of the tinted lens chosen with the colorimeter is rarely the same as the coloured overlay.

How much is it going to cost?

The standard price of a sight test is £29. This is covered by the NHS for certain categories e.g. children under 16 or under 19 if in full time education.

Initial Overlay assessment £15
Price of Overlay £9
Full Colorimetry test £30
Price of spectacles from £75
